The aim of the AgriZone is to create a cluster of facilities and services that will stimulate the growth of KwaZulu-Natal’s perishables sector.
The AgriZone will serve as a centre of excellence and a model of new technology, production methods, training and research in high-value agriculture.
The AgriZone will stimulate a move towards more high-value production in the province, and act as an incubator for new producers by providing training, mentoring, technical assistance and other support services.
Its close proximity to the airport provides the perfect opportunity for growing KwaZulu-Natal’s air-freight export market.
Land extent approximately 64 ha
First phase – 20 ha
Crops for cultivation:
- Cut Flowers
- Vegetables (cherry tomatoes, specialty cucumbers and yellow and red sweet peppers)
- Plantlets
Operation Model
For Blocks A and C
- Dube TradePort will function as landlord and be responsible for the overall maintenance of outside facilities and infrastructure. It will also provide and maintain common services such as water and roads.
- Growers/facility operators will be tenants and will be responsible for:
- Managing and maintaining infrastructure within greenhouses
- Buying and maintaining working capital
- The day-to-day operation of greenhouses
- Employing workers within the enterprises
For Block D
- Dube TradePort will either be the operator or partner with a producer and be responsible for production, marketing, employing labour, maintenance, and providing working capital.
