Dube TradePort Corporation Set to Introduce New Freighter Service

Dube TradePort Corporation is intent on introducing three freighter aircraft during the current financial year in an effort to increase direct air connectivity from Durban.

It is envisaged that two freighters will fly into Africa and one to Europe for the benefit of, especially KwaZulu-Natal-based business, affording such enterprises the opportunity to enter global supply chains and access foreign markets.

The benefits of air fright include high performance standards and the flexibility of meeting the changing needs of users, especially with the growing prevalence of just-in-time principles within various economic sectors. Time and cost have become critical factors of business and the use of airfreight addresses both these issues, creating a vital competitive advantage. In addition, insurance premiums are generally lower for airfreight than rates applied to land or ocean freight cartage.

Air transportation is also the best medium for the rapid delivery to markets of perishable goods.

Dube TradePort Corporation is currently rolling-out its African Strategy, which involves the development and nurturing of sound business relationships with key Provincial drivers of business and tourism. Route planning is being undertaken in conjunction with the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry (corporate and business travel), Trade & Investment KwaZulu-Natal (trade and commercial linkages),Tourism KwaZulu-Natal (leisure travel and tourism/hospitality packaging) and the Board of Airline Representatives (Foreign Carriers Association).

The development of King Shaka International Airport and its ability to serve Greater Durban provides exciting opportunities for airlines to launch new air service to KwaZulu-Natal. With an initial capacity to handle 7,5 million passengers a year (increasing to 45 million) and with a 3 700 metre sea-level runway and space for a second parallel runway, this ultra-modern airport makes any international destination immediately accessible from Durban.

Air traffic is driven by both the active economy (business travellers) and KwaZulu-Natal's numerous tourist attractions. Major benefits of the Province's strong economic base include the following attributes:

  • KwaZulu-Natal generates a sixth of South Africa’s GDP, in spite of representing only 8% of the country’s total land area;
  • KwaZulu-Natal boasts a strong automotive manufacturing base;
  • The Province is involved in extensive component manufacturing operations;
  • KwaZulu-Natal is actively involved in the production of perishables;
  • The Province is home to two major seaports, Durban and Richards Bay, affording the region an international business attitude;
  • Various agencies exist to promote trade, investment and economic growth. These include the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Trade & Investment KwaZulu-Natal;
  • KwaZulu-Natal is Unilever’s Africa headquarters; and
  • In addition to growing numbers of both business and tourist air passengers, KwaZulu-Natal is generating increasing levels of cargo demand.
