Dube AgriZone, which is classified a Special Economic Zone, specialises in the propagation, cultivation and processing of high-value agricultural and horticultural crops.

This is Africa’s first integrated perishables supply chain. It offers the most technologically-advanced future farming platform on the continent and has in place 16ha of greenhouses – the largest climate-controlled glass-covered growing area in Africa – coupled with a dedicated post-harvest pack houses, a central distribution centre, nursery and Dube AgriLab, and a cutting-edge plant tissue culture laboratory facility.

Dube AgriLab is a highly sophisticated and ultra-modern plant tissue culture laboratory whose research and development is informed by both client and industry needs.

Research and development undertakings by Dube AgriLab have resulted in a number of new protocols, giving effect to an expansion of product offerings to include forestry, sub-tropical fruits, vegetables, succulents, ornamentals and elite medicinal crops.

DUBE PACKHOUSE


Dube Packhouse is a dedicated post-harvest pack house and distribution centre, currently operated by Lebombo Finepak, which is an organisation is responsible for sorting, packaging and distributing a wide variety of fruits and vegetables from the farming community around South Africa for distribution to major national retailers in the region.

MARKET POTENTIAL


The agricultural sector boasts exceptional market potential for both domestic and export consumption.

There exist in KwaZulu-Natal some 6.5 million hectares of land, well-suited for farming purposes. Of this landholding, 82% is ideal for extensive livestock production, whilst 18% comprises arable land.

The sugarcane sector is one of the biggest agricultural industries in KwaZulu-Natal, comprising about 22 500 registered sugarcane growers. The industry produces an estimated average of 2.2 million tons of sugar per season.

Some 60% of sugar produced here is marketed in the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), with the balance exported to markets in other parts of Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
